Elizabeth Copley

Elizabeth Mary Copley was born in or about 1801, the eldest daughter of Sir Joseph Copley of Sprotborough, Yorks, 3rd Bart., and Lady Cecil Hamilton, the divorced wife of her cousin the 1st Marquess of Abercorn. The second daughter of this union was Maria, later Countess Grey, wife of the 3rd Earl. Their brother Joseph William, who succeeded as 4th Bart. in 1838, was born in 1804. A daughter, Cecil Frances, by their mother's first marriage, married Lord Clonmore who succeeded as 4th Earl of Wicklow in 1818.
Besides numerous relatives, Miss Copley had a wide circle of friends, particularly the families of the 4th Duke of Portland, the 1st Earl of Ellesmere and the Grenfells of Taplow, and these friendships are reflected in the many letters from Lucy, Baroness Howard de Walden, Charlotte, Viscountess Ossington, Harriet, Countess of Ellesmere and Georgina Mary Grenfell. There was a deep attachment between Miss Copley and her sister Maria, witness the 1354 letters from Maria who sometimes wrote to her “beloved” sister every day. (Miss Copley's letters to Maria are preserved among the papers of Lady Grey.) Much of this correspondence concerns family and friends, especially marriages, illnesses and deaths. Like Maria, Miss Copley, who was known to all her friends as “Coppy”, suffered from ill health and consulted many physicians - see the large number of prescriptions.
She was involved in many religious and charitable enterprises but two predominate in her papers - a Protestant mission to the Catholics of Ireland and an educational mission, also with a Protestant ethos, to the women and girls of Syria and the Lebanon. The Irish scheme was based on a model farm at Ballinglen, County Mayo, and a school in which instruction from the Bible was a major feature. The Syrian initiative had been begun by Mrs Elizabeth Thompson and her sisters and catered for a mixture of races and religions with a strong bias towards conversion to Protestantism. Miss Copley visited Ireland several times and Syria once. She also ventured to the West Indies, but an attack of serious illness put an end to the work she hoped to accomplish there. She died in 1887.

Contents

The bulk of the correspondence ranges in date between 1821 and 1874 when it abruptly ceases. It appears that Miss Copley had a breakdown towards the end of that year and was for a time kept under restraint. She evidently recovered to some extent as there are letters from her among the papers of Maria Grey and 3rd Earl Grey after that date. She and Maria had many friends in common and often exchanged the letters they received from mutual acquaintances. Thus the papers of Lady Grey should always be consulted in conjunction with those of Miss Copley.

Arrangement

Nearly all the correspondents have been listed under their final titles. The same problems of changes of name of female correspondents on marriage, or for other reasons, arose as in the case of the papers of Lady Grey - see the introduction and appendix to that list. Most of the writers signed with initials only, but almost all have been identified. A few other Copley papers have been included in this list and a few subject files have been placed at the end of the alphabetical sequence. The papers have been arranged and the list compiled by Dr J.M. Fewster.

1,354 letters and 3 fragments to Miss Copley. Lady Grey wrote to her “beloved” sister frequently, at times every day. Her letters are discursive and concern matters relating to the family (including tensions within the Grey family and her own uncomfortable position within it), and friends. Illnesses, treatments and bereavements figure largely in these letters which also include accounts of travels abroad, and in Scotland, of which she was very fond. Politics and personalities are mentioned, especially in the period when her husband held office - she was distressed when he was attacked in Parliament and the press, as in 1848. Financial worries are occasionally mentioned and comments made on Miss Copley's Irish and other concerns.
