About the creator

The Catholic Women's League (CWL) was founded by Margaret Fletcher (1862-1943) as the Legion of Catholic Women's Workers in 1906. Its aim was to promote the religious, educational and social welfare interests of Catholic women, to ensure Catholic representation of these interests on major public bodies, and to initiate and maintain charitable works. Branches exist in the United Kingdom (with representation in over 200 parishes in 2017) and throughout the world, with the Catholic Women's League forming a constituent part, along with other Catholic women's organisations, of the World Union of Catholic Women's Organisations (WUCWO). Members of the Catholic Women's League are represented on all the major women's organisations in the United Kingdom and are involved in charitable work of all kinds, helping to promote issues as diverse as infant and family welfare, old people's welfare, housing, social justice, migration, and education. During the First and Second World Wars, the League performed a vital function in the management of canteen huts, providing meals for soldiers in England and in theatres of operation all over the world. Although ostensibly a non-political organisation, the Catholic Women's League encourages its members to exert influence in those issues rooted in social justice and peace, and particularly seek to make the voice of Catholic women heard in the legislative system on issues of the Family through contacting local MPs.

Contents

The archive of the Catholic Women's League includes papers on its founders and history; central administration (refugee and service committees, councils, services, financial and property management and publications); governance; events (commemorations, jubilees and study days); papers on its relationship with other Catholic and women's organisations; and papers on its relationship with regional and international branches.

B. Central Administration
Council and Committee
D10/B1/1   1907 - 1908
Provisional Executive Committee (later Executive Committee) meeting minute book (1-22)
Volume is indexed and includes a list of Executive Committee members
Includes meetings of sub-committees: Arts and Crafts, the Constitution, Finance, Fund Raising, General Lectures, Informal Meetings, the Information Bureau, the Leaflet, the Missal Fund, Public Service, the Pope’s Jubilee Gift and Social Lectures
These minutes in this volume end at number 48 but agenda and unsigned minutes for meeting number 54 are loose at the back. This indicates that meetings numbers 49 - 53 for June to November 1911 took place but the record is missing. This was a period of administrative change for the Catholic Women's League: minutes of the Committee of Council start in late 1911 and although the surviving series of Council minutes starts in February 1912, it seems likely that the Council started meeting in late 1911.

File 1: 23 February 1995 - 11 June 2009
The December 1950 minutes refer to that as the first meeting so the Canteen Committee may have been reconstructed then. It was renamed Huts and Canteens Committee from December 1950 to April 1955 and then Services and Clubs Committee from June 1955 to May 1965. There is a gap in the minutes between May 1965 and June 1973 and the Committee has been known as the Services Committee from February 1974 onwards.
