The Ord family

The following information about the Ord family and their properties is based on the documents themselves, Sedgefield Parish Registers in the Durham County Records Office, Probate, Halmote Court and Tithe Records in the Durham University Library Archives and Special Collections and Surtees History of Durham Vol. III.
Benjamin Ord, the youngest son of Ralph Ord of Eastwell House, purchased a moiety of Bradbury manor from Thomas Farrer in 1719. At the time it comprised four farms, later known as Little Isle, Swan Carr, Rydings and Sands, two cottages and a house. The size of the farms was not permanently fixed. Fields were sometimes switched from one to the other and Rydings Farm eventually disappeared, being probably either absorbed into Swann Carr Farm or divided between Swan Carr and Sands Farms.
It is not clear whether this purchase included the fields close to Sands Hall. They were part of Thomas Farrer's moiety of the manor and leased out to John Hodgson in 1670 but are not mentioned specifically in the purchase in 1719 nor in a settlement of the property in 1736. They may have been acquired with the Hall at a later date, about 1738 according to Surtees, in a transaction for which we do not have the deeds. Later in the century they appear to have formed a "Home Farm" which the Ords kept in their own hands. It is possible that the family was already farming these lands around the Hall when Benjamin made his purchase. At the time of his death in 1685/86 Benjamin's father was paying rent to Thomas Farrer "for Sands farming" and to John Hodgson. The lands rented from John Hodgson are not specified but could be those mentioned in 1670 as being on lease from the Farrers to a John Hodgson.
Benjamin settled the moiety of Bradbury manor on his third son Robert at the time of Robert's marriage in 1736 and it passed in succession to Robert's son Ralph who died in 1806.
The three closes in Bradbury, which formerly belonged to the Smith family of Foxton, and the two properties in Mordon were acquired by the Ord family at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. Part of "Hodshon's Estate" in Mordon had been purchased by Richard Wright a close relative of the Ords by marriage. He owned other estates in the parish of Sedgefield, including the other moiety of the manor of Bradbury which he bought from Farrer Wren in 1785 and three farms in Fishburn: Butterwick Bridge, Cow Burn and Horseshoe House. The remainder of "Hodshon's Estate" was acquired later either by Richard Wright himself or by his heir Richard Ord/Wright in whose hands it was at the time of the Tithe Awards in 1838. Having no children of his own Richard Wright adopted his godchild, the fourth son of Ralph Ord, as his heir on condition that he changed his name to Wright.
Richard Ord/Wright added considerably to the estates which he inherited from his godfather. As well as the Ord moiety of Bradbury manor which he purchased from his father's heirs he bought Smith's closes with some other lands in 1808 and Harpington Hill Farm in 1817. On his death without issue all these estates reverted to the heirs of his eldest brother Mark.
The collection does not include many deeds for these later transactions. They were presumably passed on to the new owners when the estates were eventually sold. There are also no deeds relating to Sands Hall or to the other properties farmed by Benjamin Ord's family before 1719 although the estate records show that they were still farming these lands at the end of the 18th century. The estate records include 18th century leases and valuations of farms in both moieties of the manor of Bradbury and for Richard Wright's farms in Fishburn, with schemes of husbandry and sometimes details of farm buildings. The haymaking and harvest accounts and farming diaries give an even more detailed picture of work on the lands kept in Ralph Ord's own lands between 1774 and 1798. They contain names and numbers of the workers employed with their rates of pay and a daily record of the work done by each, with notes on farming practice.
Although the collection contains 18 deeds relating to properties in the township of Sedgefield it is not clear whether the properties concerned were ever in the possession of the Sands Hall branch of the Ord family. The last two deeds (Nos. 84 & 85) appear to involve members of the Lynn family of Shotton and Bradbury from whom Richard Ord/Wright purchased Smith's closes. The remainder concern three houses in the 17th century, only one of which is known to have any connection with the Ord family.
This is "Malham's House", the house sold to John Hodgshon and James Orde by Thomas Malham of Sedgefield, husbandman, in 1665. It is first described as a firehouse, that is a house with a fire place, and backside. Less than two years later it has become two adjoining mansion houses with a garth at the back. John Hodgshon and James Orde took one of the houses and half the garth each after a transaction whereby they sold both houses jointly to Lionel Ourd of Sedgefield, weaver, and he sold them back as separate lots. In 1670 James Ourd sold his mansion house to Ralph Ourd of Swainston, yeoman. Ralph Ourd of Swainston died in 1682 leaving a widow, Ann, and two children Richard and Jane under age. The baptisms of the children are registered as is Ralph's own burial, and the Probate Records contain an Inventory taken after his death but neither of these sources indicate what relationship, if any, existed between him, Lionel and James or the branch of the family who later purchased Sands Hall. The description of the boundaries of the two mansion houses shows that John Hodgshon's portion adjoined property belonging to another Ralph Ourd. This could be, although it is by no means certain, Ralph Ord of Eastwell House who died possessed of a house "at the north end of Sedgefield" which he left to his youngest son Benjamin, later of Sands Hall.
The Ords were a large family with several branches spread throughout the parish of Sedgefield. The registers show that in 1600 there were at least three separate branches headed by Rowland Hoord of Sedgefield and the brothers Mark and Ralph Hoord of Whinhouses, sons of Lionel. This Lionel was probably grandfather of the Lionel mentioned in the above transaction as both Mark and Ralph Hoord named their eldest son Lionel. Another family headed by John Ourd of Fishburn came from Fenwick in Northumberland and lived in the parish briefly. John Ourd's family held lands in Fishburn from 1602 to 1649 but their names only appear in the registers between 1608 and 1610. The baptisms of two sons John and Robert are recorded followed by their burials at the ages of 13 months and 1 month, and the burial of their mother a few days before that of Robert. Some time between 1610 and 1624 John returned to his former home in Northumberland. In his will dated 14 January 1623/24 (proved 1625) he describes himself as a gentleman of Fenwick. He mentions his eldest son Bartram, born about 1607, but no other children. Surtees makes no attempt to link John Ourd's family with the Ords already living in Sedgefield at the turn of the century and no documentary evidence has been found to substantiate the family tradition, echoed in Burke's Landed Gentry, that the Ords of Sands Hall were descended from the Ords of Fenwick.
The spelling of the name varies in the registers but until about 1617 it always begins with "H" except when it refers to John. After 1622, by which time John Ourde gentleman may have returned to Fenwick, the form "Hoord" appears only twice, in 1630 and 1643. On all other occasions it is written as Ourd or one of the variants Oord, Ouarde, Oard and Ord. Lionel's eldest son Mark, however, was still using the earlier form "Hoord" when his will was drawn up in 1639.
From the middle of the 17th century the registers show that there were Ords living in Fishburn, Embleton (alias Elmdon) and Swainston as well as at least two families in Sedgefield. Although probably connected their relationships cannot be established on the basis of the registers and wills alone. Surtees presumably had other other sources, perhaps family tradition or additional title deeds, for tracing the descendants of Lionel Ord and linking them with Benjamin Ord of Sands Hall. Surtees' pedigree is certainly consistent with the registers but it ignores many other Ords whose names appear there and cites no authority for identifying Benjamin's father Ralph Ourd of Eastwell House as the Ralph, son of Ralph Ourde of Whinhouse, who was baptised 26 May 1622 and thus another grandson of Lionel Ourd. The name "Ralph" recurs frequently and in the 1650's there were at least three adult Ralph Ords of Sedgefield in addition to Ralph Ord of Swainston:
20 May 1656: Marriage of Ralph Ourd [of Swainston] toAnn Snathe, widow, at Embleton
23 November 1656: Burial of Ralph Ourd of Sedgefield
4 December 1656: Burial of Ralph Ourd of Sedgefield junior
1 March 1657: Baptism of Thomas, son of Ralph and Ann Ourd of Swainston
18 December 1657: Baptism of Ralph son of Ralph Ourd of Sedgefield
The two Ralphs in the last entry quoted are almost certainly Benjamin's elder brother and his father Ralph Ourd of Eastwell House. The latter appears to have been the real founder of the family's fortune. The Inventory taken at the time of his death in the early part of 1686 shows that he had a milking herd of 20, 7 yoke of oxen, with steers heifers and calves, as well as a flock of over 100 sheep and 7 swine. His goods and chattels were valued at £777.12.10d. after the payment of all debts and expenses. In addition to this he was able to leave property to each of his three sons Mark, Ralph and Benjamin.
Benjamin was the youngest of Ralph's nine children and more than 20 years younger than his two brothers, being only about 7 years old when his father died. However he was the only one of the three to marry and have children. Thus on the death of his brother Ralph in 1735, Mark having already died in 1708, Benjamin eventually took possession of the whole estate previously owned by their father, in addition to the moiety of Bradbury manor which he had already purchased.
Under their father's will the eldest brother Mark was given "The Nue House ... with all the land belonging unto it", while Ralph was to have "the house which I now live in with the close of land called the Noble Rent". Benjamin was given a house "at the north end of Sedgefield butting and bounding on the north side with the house of Thomas Ourd".
The only one of these properties that can be positively identified is Ralph's. This was Eastwell House, a copyhold property which can be traced in the Halmote Court records. It is marked on the early 6 inch O.S. maps and on the Tithe plan as the last tenement going out of Sedgefield towards Butterwick. Although there are no title deeds for Eastwell House in the collection there is a farm lease (No.116) and there are references to Eastwell Grange and the Noble Rent in the harvest accounts and husbandry books.
Surtees describes Benjamin's father as a gentleman, but the impression gained from the family wills and such title deeds as we have suggests that the family was still very close to the land and regarded themselves as working farmers with a mixture of copyhold and leasehold lands. The plough and wain gear were valuable possessions which Ralph determined at the end of his will, perhaps in response to family questioning, should remain in the joint possession of his wife and three sons; "and if it have any need of reparations it is to be repaired by them that have the profit of them". At the time of his death he was employing only two labourers on a permanent basis. His wife, on her death, left a cow to each of her surviving daughters; and their eldest son, Mark, was equally specific in referring to his stock and farm implements.
The family also had a close association with the butchers to whom they presumably sold their cattle. A relative, Thomas Ord, was a butcher (Durham University Library Archives and Special Collections: Church Commission Bishopric Estates [collection GB-0033-CCB] Bundle 483, 187747: lease to Thomas Ord butcher for 3 lives, all of the lives being butchers). Mark allowed a Durham butcher John Wilson to occupy "housing" on one of the fields which he left to Benjamin in 1708 and Benjamin himself, whose property adjoined that of Thomas Ord, became a butcher. It must have been a profitable business for, although he was the youngest son and started with less land than either of his brothers, by the time he was 40 years old he was able to pay Thomas Farrer £1,300 for the moiety of the manor of Bradbury and later purchase Sands Hall. These two purchases would appear to mark the change in the status of the family from working tenant farmers to landed gentry with tenants of their own.

Contents

The deeds relate to properties in Sedgefield, Bradbury and Mordon, all in the parish of Sedgefield, most of which came into the possession of the Ord family of Sands Hall at different times in the 18th and 19th centuries. They include deeds for three houses and two other properties in Sedgefield, a moiety of the manor of Bradbury, three closes also in Bradbury which formerly belonged to the Smith family of Foxton, an estate in Mordon which formerly belonged to William Hodshon and another estate in Mordon which may be identified as Harpington Hill Farm.

Accession details

The collection of documents listed here under the title "Ord of Sands Hall, Sedgefield" was acquired by Durham University Library between 1950 and 1967 and has come from two different sources.
The first group (Nos. 1-90) were in the possession of the Ord family until the time of their sale. The family left Sands Hall in 1932 but the documents were removed and kept by Mrs. Hastings-Ord at Packham House in Hampshire. About 1950 the collection was divided and sold in small lots. The University Library apparently purchased one lot at a Hodgson's auction in Spring 1950 [H] and another two lots at auction by Sotheby's on 3 April 1950 [Lot 159] and 11 March 1952 [Lot 250]. A fourth lot, sold by Sotheby's 4 February 1952 [Lot 80], was purchased by a member of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society and deposited later in Carlisle Record Office. In 1965 an exchange was effected with the Society whereby seven documents relating to Carlisle or Kendal in Lot 159 were transferred to Carlisle in return for fourteen items relating to Durham from Lot 80. ( “Dalston Family Documents”, C. Roy Hudleston. Transactions of the C.&W.A.&A.S. Vol. LXV - New Series 1965).
The remaining items (Nos. 91-141) were collected by the Director of Houghall Agricultural College and in 1967 they were presented to the University Library by his widow Mrs. M. Cassels of Crook Hall, through the New Carilef Society. Whereas the documents in the main section are concerned largely with title to some of the family properties in and around Sedgefield, this group consists of estate records: farm leases and valuations, haymaking and harvest accounts and diaries. This section also includes two items (Nos. 123 and 124) relating to the Dalston family mentioned above.

Arrangement

The division of the collection into lots appears to have been quite arbitrary, and the present arrangement takes no account of it. The deeds are now arranged chronologically according to the property to which they relate followed by a small group of miscellaneous items. This has the effect of restoring an earlier arrangement where at least two of the properties are concerned, the documents having been previously numbered in an 18th century hand, and highlights several gaps in the series.
The farm leases and valuations are arranged chronologically, followed by the accounts, bills and diaries.
