The Backhouse family of Darlington traces its descent from John and Sarah Backhouse, members of the Society of Friends in Yealand Redmayne, Lancashire (c. 1660). By the end of the 18th century the family had established itself in Darlington,
first as linen manufacturers and then as bankers with expanding business interests, and had allied itself by marriage with the Peases, Darlington's most prominent Quaker family.
The banking firm, known until 1798 as "James and Jonathan Backhouse and Co.", was started in 1774 by Jonathan Backhouse (who married Ann Pease, member of another well-known Darlington family of Friends) and his younger brother, James. On the
former's death in 1826 control passed to his son, Jonathan Backhouse junior (1779-1842), who in 1811 had married Hannah Chapman (1787-1850), eldest daughter of Joseph Gurney, Quaker and banker, of Lakenham Grove, Norfolk. Ties of kinship established
with the Barclay, Birkbeck, Chapman, Church, Fox, Hoare and Hodgkin families consolidated the Backhouses' position in the country's Quaker banking and business network.
The management of the bank's branches and of its subsidiary interests in quarries, collieries, shipping and railways involved the participation of numerous members of the family. Jonathan Backhouse, with his cousin Edward Pease, was one of the
promoters of the Stockton and Darlington railway in 1820. Jonathan and Hannah Backhouse were both Ministers in the Society of Friends and undertook extensive missionary journeys in England and America.
Jonathan Backhouse and Co. remained a family business until it amalgamated with Barclay and Co. Ltd. in 1896. Since then members of the family have been directors of Barclay's Darlington branch and of private banking firms. Descendants of
Jonathan Backhouse have also distinguished themselves in Parliament, local government, the armed forces, publishing and academic life.

Scope and content
The Backhouse papers illustrate the close ties of kinship and business interests uniting many of the English Quaker families in the 18th. and 19th.centuries.In 1811 Jonathan Backhouse junior married Hannah Gurney, daughter of Joseph Gurney, a
Quaker banker in Norfolk, and many of the documents in this collection concern her Gurney relations (including Joseph John Gurney, the philanthropist, and his sister, Elizabeth Fry) and their connections with other families of Friends, for instance
the Chapmans, Barclays, Birkbecks and Hoares. The marriage in 1848 of Edmund Backhouse, the only surviving son of Jonathan and Hannah, to Juliet Fox explains the existence in this collection of letters and deeds concerning the Fox family in Cornwall
and many of Juliet Fox's Quaker ancestors and relations - the Yorkshire Hornors and Hirds, the Hustlers of Yorkshire and Lancashire, the Fells of Lancashire and the Fullers of Norfolk. The documents have been arranged in the following groups: deeds,
correspondence and papers, journals, pedigrees and genealogical notes, and miscellanea. The majority of the deeds fall within the period of the 18th. and first half of the 19th. centuries although the earliest is dated 1352. They include wills,
marriage settlements, trusts and transactions relating to properties in County Durham, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Norfolk, Cornwall and Hampshire. Others reflect the wide-spread business interests of the Hustler family, ranging from the promotion of
canal companies to the wool-trade in Yorkshire and mining and the coal-trade in Yorkshire, Lancashire and County Durham. Some Fox documents concern the mining of ores in Cornwall. The series of correspondence and papers includes a number of Quaker
marriage and birth certificates. Many of the letters comprise the family and personal correspondence of Hannah Backhouse, dating from both before and after her marriage; these letters are complemented by her journals which cover the period
1802-1824. Later family correspondence includes letters from Jed. [Jonathan Edmund] Backhouse, son of Edmund and Juliet, mainly to his mother. Much of the correspondence in this collection, especially that for the early 19th. century, illustrates
the doctrine and activities of members of the Society of Friends and their attitudes towards such topics as war, slavery, prison reform and the payment of church rates. Other letters concern Quakers in America, Australia and Holland and missionary
trips, such as those made by Jonathan and Hannah Backhouse to Ireland in the 1820's and to America in the 1830's. Some of the correspondence, again mainly that for the first half of the 19th. century, gives information on political and business
conditions in England and on international affairs. The pedigrees and genealogical notes included in the collection may be supplemented by the pedigrees in Burke's
for the Backhouse, Barclay, Birkbeck, Chapman, Fox, Gurney, Hoare, Pease and Richardson (of Shotley) families.

The majority of the documents listed here were deposited in Durham by Colonel Miles R.C. Backhouse (1878-1962), great-grandson of Jonathan Backhouse junior and Hannah Chapman Backhouse, through the National Register of Archives in August 1949 and
a small additional deposit of deeds, dating from 1735-1864, was received in December 1958.

This collection is still being sorted and listed. Many of the documents are very similar in nature and content to the material in Part 1 of the Backhouse Papers, although there are more business papers and probably more items from the second half
of the nineteenth century in Part 2. Many of the papers concern Jonathan Backhouse junior (1779-1842), his wife Hannah Chapman Backhouse, née Gurney (1787-1850) and their descendants, and also the descendants of John Backhouse (1784-1847), brother
of Jonathan Backhouse junior. Provisional list of contents:
B. Business and testamentary papers, including correspondence, papers, accounts, bills, ledgers and vouchers relating to business and banking matters, share certificates, insurance policies, trusts, settlements, executorships (including
probate valuations), legal and financial matters and land transactions. Many of these concern the affairs of descendants of John Backhouse (1784-1847) but others are business papers of Edmund Backhouse, M.P. (1824-1906), son of JB and HCB, and of
Edmund's son, JEB.

Accession details
Deposited on permanent loan on 8 November 1982 (on the recommendation of the Historical Manuscripts Commission) by Mr. David M. Backhouse of London, grandson of Colonel Miles R.C. Backhouse who deposited Part 1 of the Backhouse Papers. Mr.
Backhouse was acting on behalf of his aunt, Mrs. Beatrice Backhouse, who had inherited these papers on the death of her husband, Roger Trelawny Backhouse (1905-1977), a son of Colonel Miles R.C. Backhouse and formerly the local director of Barclay's
Bank, Darlington, Co. Durham.

Items from sections A and B will not normally be available until the sorting and listing of these groups has been completed. Items from the other sections can generally be made available provided that arrangements to consult them are made in
advance. Some papers in section I are in need of conservation treatment before they can be produced.
