The society

The Architectural and Archaeological Society of Durham and Northumberland was founded in 1861, with the twin objectives of helping both to study and to preserve whatever is of architectural, archaeological and antiquarian interest within the area. It is still active.
It has published its Transactions since 1862 (volumes 1-11 1862-1965 and New Series volumes 1-6 1968-1982). This became Durham Archaeological Journal in 1984.

Records of the Society comprising minutes, accounts, some Society cards, correspondence and notices of meetings and excursions.

Accession details

Deposited by the Society. Accounts and subscription books were deposited in November 1965 by Dr C.W. Gibby.
MS.7/2 (part) and 8/1 were transferred from D.G. Ramage's files amongst the Durham University Library records April 2007.
MS.8/2 is accumulated from posters displayed in Palace Green Library.
MS.7/1-2 and 9/1-7 were transferred from the files of the former president, Dr A.I. Doyle, at Palace Green Library, 21 September 2007, Acc No Misc.2007/8:10.
MS.1/3 was deposited by the secretary 5 March 2008, Acc No Misc.2007/8:41.

Gibby by the then president A.I. Doyle [c.1970] with also Mrs Gibby, Linda Drury and Ela Wright amongst those present, and also of Gibby holding forth to [students outside in the College].
