General Charles Grey

General Charles Grey was born in 1804, the second surviving son of Charles, 2nd Earl Grey by his wife Mary Elizabeth, née Ponsonby. He began his military career in 1820 as 2nd lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade and rose rapidly by exchange and purchase to the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 1830. He was appointed to the 71st Highland Light Infantry in 1833 and commanded that Regiment as lieutenant-colonel until 1842 when he went on half-pay. He never returned to active service - a source of some regret to him especially during the Crimean War - but continued to advance in rank and attained that of general in 1865. In 1863 he was made colonel of his old regiment, the 71st.
Meanwhile, he had held various appointments in the civil sphere. He was M.P. for High Wycombe, 1831-37, private secretary to his father, the prime minister, from about December 1831 to November 1833, equerry-in-waiting to Queen Victoria from 1837 and private secretary to the Prince Consort 1849-61. On the Prince's death in December that year, Grey became in fact, though not at first in name, private secretary to the Queen until his own death, 31 March 1870. The Queen then wrote of him: "He was most truly devoted and faithful and had such a kind heart. His great worth, honesty, cleverness, charm of conversation, and his great experience will ever remain engraven in our minds and hearts and make us deeply lament his loss." (Buckle, G.E. The Letters of Queen Victoria. A Selection from Her Majesty's Correspondence and Journal between the Years 1862 and 1878. 2nd series, I, 13. A writer in The Times of 1 April 1870 commented: "The position of General Grey at court ... was one of great delicacy, and one which gave him great influence, without being at all responsible either to the Ministry for the time being or to Parliament; and it speaks much in his behalf that he should so long have been able to wield that power and sustain that influence without ever having given occasion for hostile criticism".
Grey was author, under the Queen's direction, of The Early Years of the Prince Consort (1867). He also published a memoir of his father under the title Some Account of the Life and Opinions of Charles Second Earl Grey (1861). Some of his own journals written when he accompanied his regiment to Canada in 1838 together with his letters to his father while he was there have been published in William Ormsby's Crisis in the Canadas 1838 - 1839 (Toronto, 1964).
In 1836 Grey married Caroline Eliza Farquhar, eldest daughter of Sir Thomas Farquhar, 2nd baronet. Their son Albert succeeded his uncle Henry as 4th Earl Grey in 1894.

The papers in boxes 18-21 were acquired by the University Library (Archives and Special Collections) in 1991 with the aid of a government purchase grant and generous financial assistance from Lord Howick and Associated British Foods PLC. They had, for no apparent reason, been separated from the main body of material already at Durham, also listed here. In many cases letters from the same persons and on the same or similar subjects are to be found in both sections; e.g the 336 letters from General Grey to his wife 1840-1869 complement the 213 letters. Similarly the 113 letters from Queen Victoria to General Grey fit in with the 559 letters from the Queen. There are, however, some new correspondents and additional material, especially the diaries of Caroline Grey which are packed with information about the activities of those with whom she was associated including members of the royal family. In addition some papers of Lady Victoria Dawnay, daughter of General Grey, are noted here.

Accession details

The Earl Grey Papers were deposited by the 5th Earl Grey, 1956, with further deposits by Mary, Baroness Howick and the 2nd Baron Howick, 1962-94. Some additional papers of General Charles Grey were purchased by the University Library in 1991. Some correspondence badly affected by damp was added by a descendant in July 2017 (Acc No Misc.2016/17:157).

Copyright and copying

Permission to make any published use of material from the collection must be sought in advance from the Sub-Librarian, Special Collections (e-mail PG.Library@durham.ac.uk) and, where appropriate, from the copyright owner. The Library will assist where possible with identifying copyright owners, but responsibility for ensuring copyright clearance rests with the user of the material. Some of the papers listed here fall into the category of "royal correspondence" and their use is subject to special conditions.

Arrangement

The papers, including those of Caroline Grey, have been arranged according to correspondents in alphabetical order except for enclosures and some coherent groups of documents, when cross-references have been provided. The numbering using a roman numeral and an arabic, separated by a solidus, refers to the box and folder in which the item is kept.
Boxes 18 -21 contain the more recently purchased material, which can be identified by its having been numbered using the box number prefixes. The volumes are kept separately in the main sequence of Grey volumes, which are given the code GRE-V.
