Wilhelm Levison (1876-1947)

The German-Jewish historian Wilhelm Levison was one of the most important medievalists of his generation. He completed a doctorate on Roman history at the University of Bonn in 1898 but became a specialist in the Merovingian period. From 1899 until 1920, he was on the staff of the Monumenta Germaniae Historicae, working on the Scriptores Rerum Merovingicarum with Bruno Krusch. In 1903 he completed his Habilitation in Bonn; that year he also started teaching at the university. In 1920 he received a full chair and in 1931 Durham University awarded him an honorary D. Litt in recognition of his work on Anglo-Saxon history. Levison lost his chair in Bonn in 1935 due to the Nuremburg Laws. In 1939 Durham University offered him an honorary fellowship that, uniquely for such a position, came with a salary; he and his wife Elsa left Bonn for Durham in April that year. But for a brief period of internment on the Isle of Man in July-September 1940, he spent the rest of his life in Durham. Levison gave the Ford Lectures in English history in 1943, which became the basis for his monumental England and the Continent in the Eighth Century.

Contents

The papers consist primarily of correspondence, personal papers, two unpublished lectures, notes, galley proofs, reviews of Levison's works, and material relating to the history of Levison's family. The correspondence covers the periods before, during and especially after World War II, and have much to say on maintaining scholarly research at this time, the experiences of Levison's academic colleagues during the war and the life of Bonn University in the immediate aftermath of the war. The papers also include the correspondence and papers of his wife, Elsa Freundlich, and a little material of her father Josef.

Accession details

Received with Professor Levison's library, which he left to the University of Durham, with the proviso that the University of Bonn might claim from it works lost from certain Bonn libraries as the result of war damage.

In Volume I and II, entries that were in the notebooks but not the catalogue were marked with post-it notes. Volume III contains scraps of paper on which the names of authors are written, but these entries do appear in the sheaf catalogue.
