The rolls are listed and kept in chronological order.
The layout of the list of rolls is as follows:
1. Reference (the rolls are referred to by the date of the tourn)
The reference is based upon the number given in the original to the tourn, but the sequence of tourns in the modern year is 3, 1, 2, and for these the seasons Spring, Summer, Autumn have been submitted, even where this seems somewhat incongruous, eg Autumn 1400.
2. Opening date as given in the heading
No attempt is made to indicate dates found in headings other than the main heading, either earlier or later, contemporary or subsequent.
3. Officials named in the heading
No attempt is made to supply the names of officials where they are wanting, eg rolls from the 1490's headed “coram prenominatis”, presumably because they were sewn to a roll for an earlier tourn.
4. Notes (where relevant) on the dating etc.
5. Cross-reference to printed extracts (the volume concerned [Surtees Society, 82] only covers the period 1296-1384
No attempt is made to call in question the dates of clearly headed rolls, eg Summer 1506, where the opening date as given falls on Saturday.
One or a series of dots is used to indicate losses from the manuscript, a dash an omission, and square brackets additional supplied or inferred information.

Where necessary, identification of townships is based on the names of tenants given in the Bursar's Rental for 1340/1, or failing that on entries elsewhere among these leaves.
On the assumption that no township appears twice at any one tourn, it is possible to exclude f.ii (Newton Ketton) and 3 (Chilton) as well as ff.2 and 213v (other tourns) as belonging with f.1, leaving ff.213 and 213r, likewise ff.212 (Raintons) and 3 (Billingham) as well as ff.1 and 2 (other tourns) do not belong with f.213v, leaving f.ii, and ff.212-213r (Shields) and ii (Wearmouth and Fulwell) as well as ff.1 and 213v do not belong with f.2, leaving f.3.
It seems that ff.1 and 212 and 212 and 213 are consecutive leaves, with the entry for one township running on from one leaf to the next.
That being so, f.213 has the last entries for a third tourn, and so f.213v presumably refers to the next tourn, the first tourn in 1339, and hence the preceding third tourn would have been that of 1338.
It cannot be demonstrated conclusively that ff.213-213r refer to the same tourn as f.1; or f.ii to the same tourn as f.213v; or f.3 to the same tourn as f.2. Nevertheless, their appearance does not suggest otherwise and it is possible that the six leaves originally belonged to two quires, each of four leaves, of which the last leaf of both is now missing.

In script and layout this roll is very similar to that dated Summer 1296. It appears to be earlier than that roll; Agnes widow of Roger Staf is mentioned at Billingham in Summer 1296, while Roger Staf himself occurs on this roll.

The feast of Augustine of Canterbury in May is found more frequently in the monastic records as a means of dating than that of Augustine of Hippo in August. No roll for a summer tourn survives again until 1345 and that is dated 6 July; later in the fourteenth century June was the normal month.

It is clear that this roll comprises at least two tourns: the places found on the first five membranes appear again on the remaining three membranes. Neither is the first tourn 1354, as stated in two fifteenth century endorsements, of which the second includes the names of a terrar and a bursar who did not hold office until later.
The date of the first five membranes is indicated by an entry under Burdon where a tenant is given an allowance of three years' rent, payments to start at Pentecost 1361. The precise date is given in an entry on the other membranes under Hesleden which mentions proceedings of the tourn held on Monday after Dunstan, proceedings that can be identified in the appropriate place on the first five membranes.
Of the remaining three membranes the two that are complete can be dated from the penultimate entry, which refers to a year's tenancy beginning Martinmas '58 "proximo futuro"; this gives a date in the preceding year, and, with the first payment due at the next Pentecost, after Pentecost 1358. The date of the first five membranes then excludes the Summer tourn 1358, leaving only Autumn 1358.
At the foot of the first five membranes there is attached, in addition to the two complete membranes for the Autumn tourn 1358, a fragment, which cannot readily be dated. It may belong to the Autumn tourn 1358: its only heading is for Aycliffe, which is not present on the two complete membranes, and its appearance is similar to that of other townships in that area on those two membranes. It does, however, repeat an entry about John Gelet found in the Summer tourn 1358 under Newton Ketton, and Newton Ketton appears among the townships on the two complete membranes, although with the only entry the names of the jurors; assigning the fragmentary membrane to Autumn 1358 implies that the Newton Ketton jurors had originally been omitted and were put down later.

Under Wolviston a new tenant is to begin payments at Pentecost '65 and this supplies the context for an entry under Harton in which the mill-pond is to be flooded on Friday, St Luke's day; 18 October fell on Friday in 1364, giving a terminus ante quem. The section on the dorse for Edmondbyers marked Monday after All Saints, ie early November, suggests that the rest of the roll should be assigned to the Autumn tourn. A possible objection to dating the roll Autumn 1364 is the reference under Pittington to Richard of Birtley as "nuper" bursar: his first term of office ended on 5 March 1363 but he took office again on 12 May 1364, according to the Bursar's Account closed on that date. To assign this roll to the period between his two terms as bursar, would, however, be difficult to reconcile with the fact that proceedings entered under Wearmouth, Shields and West Rainton all appear to continue directly at the Spring tourn 1365, and so "nuper" is taken to mean the recent term of office, as opposed to the current term.

This roll is evidently later than the Autumn tourn 1365 as it refers under Wearmouth to the injunction originating then to three men to remain on the lord's land, and under Billingham to the injunction to those who were jurors then. Equally it precedes the Summer tourn 1366 when proceedings at Wolviston found on this roll were continued, and when John Tyngryng of Wallsend had died. See also under West Merrington, where a rent will become payable at Pentecost 1366.

An entry under Shields concerns the breach of an agreement running from Easter (5 April) 1366. An entry under Wearmouth concerns the replacement of Markstanys on Tuesday, Translation of St Thomas, and 7 July fell on Tuesday in 1366; 3 July, the Translation of Thomas the apostle as opposed to Thomas of Canterbury, did not fall on Tuesday until 1369, too late to be compatible with the entry under East Rainton where payments are to start at Pentecost 1367.
The section for Hesleden is headed "Thursday after Mark (29 April) '67", and it is clear from proceedings at Billingham and Wolviston that this roll belongs between those dated to the Autumn tourn 1366 and the Summer tourn 1367.

Confirmation of the year comes from an entry under Cowpen with payments starting at Pentecost '68, as the only Autumn tourn lacking for the previous four years is 1367.

This roll consists of three membranes, each covering the northern townships of the estate, and so presumably representing the three tourns of one year. Mention under Shields of the widow of Nicholas Lee indicates that the roll is later than Spring 1474, when he appears alive, and indeed one membrane of this roll also mentions him; the two membranes in question are shown to be consecutive by the continuation at Shields of proceedings between Robynson and Taillour and between Betson and Broun, leaving the third membrane either to precede both as the Summer tourn or to follow both as the Spring tourn. At the earliest the latter would make the third membrane Spring 1475, which is not compatible with the mention under Dalton of Richard Rasshe as vicar, since he resigned on 8 January 1475 (Reg.IV f.168r); this membrane is therefore to be dated Summer 1474, and the others Autumn 1474 and Spring 1475. One objection to the dating of the Spring 1475 membrane is the reference on it under Fulwell to Thomas Haughton as "nuper" terrar, as he appears to have continued his first term in that office until after the Summer tourn 1475 (Halmote Book II f.134v), but he may effectively have left office by February 1475, when he was appointed as the Convent's proctor for Convocation at York (Reg.IV f.168v) and sent with a letter from the Prior to the Duke of Gloucester (Reg.Parv.III f.161v).

This roll is in the hand of the scribe who appears to have written the Halmote Rolls from after Spring 1483 until Summer 1494. Of the Spring tourns for which no roll is extant between those dates, none is headed in Halmote Court Books II and III with particulars compatible with those surviving on this roll, but discrepancies can be found on other rolls, eg Autumn 1490, Spring 1492. The dating is based on the close similarity of the jurors named for each vill with those on Summer 1487 or 1488: out of 109 comparable names 102 are the same, and the roll for Summer 1487 or 1488 appears to be the one roll in which the jurors for Shields are in the same order.

For 1488 the particulars are in complete agreement (f.185r), making this the more likely of the two remaining years, but 1487 cannot be excluded as seemingly there is no heading for the Summer tourn in that year in the Halmote Court Book II.

There is no evidence that William Hawkwell was one of the officers involved with the Halmote Court except as bursar between 1495 and 1507, a period with only one "xxx3" in it. The day of the week and the day of the month as given are compatible in 1503, but not in 1493, 1513, 1523 or 1533. The Summer tourn 1503 began on Tuesday 27 June according to Halmote Court Book III (f.70r), a difference that is probably to be explained by the different types of business recorded on the rolls and in the book.

The first leaf is missing, save for a small fragment with the marginal heading “Jarow” on the recto. As the first surviving heading, f.3r, is for the second, i.e.the Autumn, tourn 1400, the entries that precede it are taken to belong to the first, the Summer, tourn; these entries are also found on a separate headless roll, while those for the autumn tourn are on another roll. There is nothing from the Spring tourn 1406, f.13v being left blank and the following leaf removed; most of the entries from the Autumn tourn 1428 and the Spring tourn 1429 are missing through the loss of f.101. There are records from separate sessions of the court at Edmundbyers on 27 Sept.1429 and 12 June 1432, f.120rv, and on 29 April 1434, f.130rv; and at Burdon on 23 March 1429/30 and 6 May 1432, f.125rv. The entries for the Summer tourn 1440, f.159v-161v, are repeated on Halmote Book II f.1r 3r.
The full headings from the halmote rolls are not given here, only the number of the tourn and the year, save in two cases: Spring 1430, 12 February at Hebburn, and Autumn 1433, 6 October at Wolviston, the steward, terrar and bursar being named in both, f.105v and 123v.

[The script indicates that this roll is to be dated to the latter part of the fourteenth century. William Rois appears as the miller at Southwick and Alexander Milner at Hesleden. The latter occurs frequently in the records of the Halmote court, taking the mill at Hesleden for 3 years from Martinmas 1368 at the Summer tourn 1368, and subsequently for similar, or shorter, terms, the last being a year's tenancy at the Autumn tourn 1385; another tenant appears at the Autumn tourn 1387. William Rois is more elusive; he was not one of the five tenants who took the mill at Southwick for 5 years from Martinmas 1375 at the Spring tourn 1376, nor the three, including John Reid, who took it for 3 years from Martinmas 1380 at the Summer tourn 1380, recorded in an entry that was added and then crossed out, but one of the two who took it over from John Reid for 12 years from Martinmas 1383 at the Summer tourn 1383, was William son of Adam, possibly identical with William Rois. This would fit well with the occurrence on this roll of William Chamberlain at Southwick: in the Halmote records his appearance there was brief, mainly in 1386, and, appropriately, in connection with the assize of ale.]

[The script indicates that this roll is to be dated to the latter part of the fourteenth century. Between 1350 and 1400 the feast of St Luke fell on a Thursday in 1352, 1358, 1369, 1375, 1380, 1386 and 1397. Evidence from the rolls of the Halmote court points to 1386 as being the most probable date. There seems to be no trace of John Dalgan miller as tenant of either of the mills at Aycliffe, unless he is identical with John de Haughton who took the fulling mill for 7 years at the Spring tourn 1370 and for a further 15 years at the Summer tourn 1377. John de Aycliffe miller at Burdon is, however, to be found taking the mill there for 9 years from Martinmas 1377 at the Spring tourn 1378, and he was succeeded by Robert Hapsamen, who took it for 8 years from Pentecost 1387 at the Autumn tourn 1386; whether John held it before 1377 is not clear, there being no entry for a tenancy after William Grampays and William Milner of Blackwell succeeded Richard Rath for 3 years at the Summer tourn 1371. Of the remaining possibilities 1375 is unlikely given the extant roll for a session of the court that included Aycliffe in August 1375, while both 1375 and 1380 are less likely than 1386 given the entry on this roll for Johanna Yut who does not appear in Halmote court entries for breaches of the assize of ale until after the death of her husband William shortly before the Summer tourn 1384.]

Dalton, Tuesday St Romonus bp year above said [The eccentric spelling of the saint's name is not repeated in the added headings below. More than one identification is possible: Romanus m., 9 August; or Romanus abp & conf., 23 October; possibly Ronanus bp & conf., 19 November. While it is natural to date this section, and the three that follow it, to the months before the fully dated heading for 4 April 1392 below, none of the saints' days fell on Tuesday in 1391, but on Wednesday, Monday and Sunday respectively. Moreover, since the 1392 heading is in the same hand and ink as the heading here, it would seem that the roll was compiled from pre-existing records, which could have been shuffled. In 1392 the feast of Romanus, 19 November, fell on Tuesday, but, while he best fits the description 'bishop', his feast was not normally used in the Durham records, and would put the sections dated by it after the Burdon section below. The simplest solution is therefore to assume that the feast of Romanus archbishop in 1391 was taken to be on Tuesday 24 October, rather than Monday 23 October.]
