Karl Britton

Karl William Britton (1909-1983) was born in Scarborough, third of four children of James Nimmo Britton, a Scottish Baptist minister, and his wife Elsie, neé Slater, from the Midlands. The majority of his childhood was spent in Clapham and Southend-on-Sea. He won a scholarship to Clare College, Cambridge, and read history before switching to philosophy. He was President of the Union Society in 1930/31. He subsequently published his recollections of Cambridge, of Wittgenstein and of C.D Broad. After graduating he won another scholarship to study for an MA degree at Harvard University. Britton’s first lectureship was at Aberystwyth, but by the end of 1940 he was teaching at University College, Swansea (later to become Swansea University). He tried twice to join the army during the war but was rejected on medical grounds. Instead he worked for the Home Office and, when the war ended, resumed his former job at Swansea.
In 1951 he was appointed to the chair of philosophy at King’s College Newcastle Upon Tyne, where he remained for the rest of his career. During his tenure there he held several university offices for the University of Durham and then the University of Newcastle (after 1963), including Dean of Arts, Public Orator, and Chairman of the Library Committee. He retired in 1975. He was given an honorary doctorate by the University of Durham in 1976.
Britton’s philosophical writings included; Communication: a Philosophical Study of Language, 1939, a study of J.S. Mill, 1953, 2nd ed. 1970, and Philosophy and the Meaning of Life, 1969, as well as numerous articles and reviews on a wide variety of topics. He spoke several times at the Aristotelian Society, had many published entries in Mind, and was invited to write entries for the Encyclopaedia Britannica on several philosophical topics. He lectured and wrote extensively on the topics of moral philosophy, language and meaning, philosophy connected to the poetry of Wordsworth, and religion. He was considered an expert on the works on J.S. Mill.
His interests outside his profession were religion, art and literature. At quite a young age, possibly while still at Cambridge, he switched from the Baptists to the Church of England, but did not formally join the latter until after his mother had died (c.1957). He was a member of a society which campaigned to retain the 1662 Prayer Book.
He was a great reader of poetry, especially Wordsworth (on whose work he lectured), and of novels, especially Hardy, Henry James, Scott, numerous modern novelists such as Susan Hill and Iris Murdoch, American campus novels and British detective stories. He had a strong interest in art, particularly in painting, his favourites being Constable, Gainsborough and other landscape painters and the Pre-Raphaelites. He corresponded with a Swiss painter of religious subjects called Willi Freiss. He had some talent himself for drawing and painting, this was mainly linked to sketching landscapes on holiday though in some of his college notebooks there is the rare sketch of a lecturer or classmate. He had no interest at all in music and claimed to be tone-deaf, although this was not literally true.
There are few references to politics in these papers, although Britton was active in a small way in politics up to about 1960 and remained interested in political trends all his life, voting for the Labour Party.

Contents

The papers are primarily concerned with Britton's philosophical work, but the early files also include some correspondence, etc. which he received as President of the Cambridge University Union Society, 1930/31. Britton's publications included Communication: a philosophical study of language (London, 1939), John Stuart Mill (London, 1953; 2nd ed. 1970), and Philosophy and the meaning of life (London, 1969), as well as numerous articles and reviews. The papers include correspondence, notebooks, files of his own published and unpublished works, reports (chiefly for Cambridge University Press) on other authors' manuscripts, and recollections of Cambridge mentors and contemporaries including C.D. Broad, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Kim Philby.
