Bernard Edwin Payne was born in the county of Sussex in 1900. He was educated at Ushaw College which he entered at the age of 12. He was an Honours graduate there in Classics and, following ordination in 1927, he taught Church History, English,
Catechetics and elocution. He was also given the responsibility of the Big Library whose re-cataloguing he completed by 1972 when he was awarded an honorary M.A. degree by Durham University. He died in 1983.
