Administrative History

The Newman Association was established in 1942 as a national Catholic organisation for lay people and clergy. It developed out of a separate organisation, the University Catholic Societies' Federation (UCSF), as an international committee during the early years of the Second World War. The aim of the organisation was to foster a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith, in the context of the contemporary world, through talks, discussions and workshops at a local level and through national conferences. The Association was named after Cardinal John Henry Newman, who supported the need for an educated laity and their active involvement both within the Church and the wider society.
The Association, governed by a nationally elected Council, met, and continues to meet, its objectives in a number of ways. On the international front, it is a member of Pax Romana - the International Catholic Movement for Intellectual and Cultural Affairs. Following the formation of the Association, an important component of its international activities included assisting Catholic exiles from Eastern Europe during the Second World War and its immediate aftermath. From the mid-twentieth century onwards, the Association broadened its reach to include Commonwealth countries and contacts were made with new graduate groups evolving in Africa and America. At the domestic level, the Association organised summer schools, conferences and other events, as well as special interest groups to voice the concerns of its members on a number of issues, including bio-ethics, the environment, birth control, theology and education. This was supplemented by the work of Newman circles, local auxiliaries formed in most of the major cities and regions of the country, who organised lectures and other events at the regional level. The Association also disseminates its views through its journal, the Newman, and other occasional publications.

Contents

The papers of the Newman Association, including papers relating to the status of the organisation and its various trust funds; governance, notably minutes of Annual General Meetings, Executive Committee and Council meetings, as well as papers of the president and secretaries correspondence; membership registers dating back to the formation of the organisation; papers relating to the Association's activities abroad, notably links with Catholic universities and Catholic exiles in Eastern Europe; papers of the activities of local circles; papers of special interest groups and other topics pertaining to theological, social, cultural and political matters; papers relating to its various conferences and events; and various publications (booklets, leaflets and journals).
There are some notable omissions. The country files cover the late 1950s/early 1960s, thereby only providing a snapshot of the Association's work overseas (although the minutes of the International Committee do provide additional evidence of its work from the early days of the organisation). The extent of the papers of local circles also vary widely which reflects either the differing record keeping practices of circle secretaries and/or the relative success or otherwise of the establishment of a local circle. On the other hand, there is an almost complete set of committee and council minutes, member registers, and a large amount of significant material relating to the challenges posed by secularisation in the latter half of the twentieth century.
