Contents

Volume I of the Ushaw Collection of Manuscripts covers a wide range of subjects relating to Catholic history, including English and papal attitudes to Jansenism in the early eighteenth century, various aspects of the history of the English College at Douai, opposition to the English Roman Catholic penal laws, and episcopal administration. The authors of these manuscripts include notable eighteenth century Catholic figures, including Edward Dicconson, Bishop James Smith, Richard Challoner, Edward Paston, Christopher Tootell and Andrew Giffard (amongst others).

Previous custodial history

Volume I was originally compiled by Ushaw's first president, Thomas Eyre (1748-1810), who collected material in the hope of continuing Dodd's Church History of England. The volume contains a number of letters, copies of letters, diary entries and other documents which were written or collected by Edward Dicconson (1670 - 1752), whose papers were in the possession of Ushaw College following its transfer from Crook Hall in 1808. Acquired at different times from many different sources.
