Contents

Volume III of the Ushaw Collection of Manuscripts covers a wide range of subjects relating to Catholic history, including: Pope Clement XIV's suppression of the Jesuits in 1773; the fate of the Jesuits in England; the Marriage Act and its implications for Catholics marrying in Protestant churches; the appointment of vicars apostolic, coadjutors and priests; other internal Catholic matters.

Previous custodial history

Volume III was compiled and bound in 1936 by the late Mgr Bernard Payne who was librarian at Ushaw from 1930 until 1977. Acquired at different times from many different sources.

Permission to make any published use of material from the collection must be sought in advance from ushaw.library@durham.ac.uk and, where appropriate, from the copyright owner. The Library will assist where possible with identifying copyright owners, but responsibility for ensuring copyright clearance rests with the user of the material

The sequence retains the original volume-number arrangement.

There is a bound printed catalogue of the first five volumes of the Ushaw College Manuscripts (excluding the more recent additions) compiled by Rev Michael Sharratt: “Ushaw College Catalogue of Archives: Ushaw Collection of Manuscripts” (Ushaw College: Durham, 1987). Card indexes are also available with both chronological and numerical arrangements.
