Letters from George Phillips to Fr [?Thomas Wilkinson], mostly of a personal or trivial nature concerning family and friends, social engagements and his day-to-day role within the Church, particularly during his time in Rome. Many letters refer
to his impressions of the religious life in Rome, such as his opinion of various churches, services and the celebration of feast days, as well as visiting places of historical and religious interest. There are occasional references to other matters,
including: the attack on the pope from secret societies in Rome (18 October 1882); his surprise that a Newcastle paper had given prominence to a Catholic ceremony, and the discussion at the Oratory over the use of a telephone in confession (25
October 1882); the difficulty of following Philosophy lectures in the English College in Rome because of the Italian pronunciation of certain words, and requiring privileges from the pope to attend lectures at Propaganda (30 November - 3 December
1882); and his surprise at reports in the
Tablet of clashes between the police and the Mazzinia in Rome as “we have neither heard nore seen anything”.
Also includes a letter from J. Gordon to his daughter, Mrs Phillips [?George's mother] concerning her emigration to Belgium over a family dispute concerning the religious education of [?her] children, commenting on church services at Malines, and
his improving health at Rome and impressions of the place.
