Contents

Volume II of the Ushaw Collection of Manuscripts covers a wide range of subjects relating to Catholic history, including Pope Clement XIV's suppression of the Jesuits in 1773 and their removal from St Omers and the English College in Rome, as well as: the fate of the Jesuits in England; the Marriage Act and its implications for Catholics marrying in Protestant churches; the administration of Douai College, the English College in Rome, and the English College in Lisbon; the appointment of Vicars Apostolic and coadjutors; other internal Catholic matters.

Previous custodial history

Volume II was originally compiled as a continuation of Volume I by Ushaw's first president, Thomas Eyre (1748 - 1810), who collected material in the hope of continuing Dodd's Church History of England. Acquired at different times from many different sources.

There is a bound printed catalogue of the first five volumes of the Ushaw College Manuscripts (excluding the more recent additions) compiled by Rev Michael Sharratt: “Ushaw College Catalogue of Archives: Ushaw Collection of Manuscripts” (Ushaw College: Durham, 1987). Card indexes are also available with both chronological and numerical arrangements.
