Previous custodial history

The origins of this artificial collection remain unknown but it is likely that a systematic attempt has been made at some point to compile these records. Some sections appear to have been collected together and include titles providing a summary of contents, although other sections appear simply to be a compilation of miscellaneous letters. Many of these letters are from, or to, Charles Newsham, so the collection essentially complements the Newsham Papers.

Contents

Manuscript papers and letters covering a broad range of subjects which mostly, although not exclusively, relate to the history of Ushaw College and internal Catholic affairs. The collection includes papers of some of the presidents of the college and other Catholic notables, including Charles Newsham, Thomas Youens, John Chadwick, William Hogarth, Anthony Lund, Mark Tierney, Nicholas Wiseman, Thomas Sherburne, Canon H. Greenhaugh, John Gillow, John Henry Newman, and Henry Edward Manning. Subjects include the Sherburne-Heatley trust fund dispute; the relationship between Rome, the bishops and the college; the financial administration of the college; staffing matters; the scheme to establish a school at St Edward's; and financial papers of notable Catholics. The collection also includes papers of the vicars apostolic relating to the 1806 campaign for Catholic emancipation.
