History of the Society

A Durham City Choral Society was established in 1947 as an amateur choir singing the general repertoire of choral pieces, with an orchestra, but this was relatively short-lived. It was re-established as the Durham Choral Society in 1962 and thence gradually grew in numbers and repertoire. There have been a number of joint ventures with other societies, locally, such as Bishop Auckland and Newcastle, and further afield, such as Geneva. Some concerts, especially Christmas ones, involve local brass bands. By 2020, a strong relationship had also been established with the Durham Music service with its youth choirs being variously involved in some concerts. Concerts generally occurred twice a year, in January and May, on Saturdays, in Durham Cathedral, with a further Christmas carol concert usually in Elvet Methodist Church in December. Durham Town Hall has also been a regular concert venue in the past. The choir usually rehearses weekly during term, at 1930, currently (2022) in the Johnston School in Durham, and prior to that variously in St Margaret's Infants School, and also Framwellgate School and Durham High School for Girls. Rehearsals start with a 10-15 minute warmup, are usually taken by the conductor, occasionally the assistant, and are accompanied by a pianist. The committee includes a chair, treasurer, secretary, concert manager and various others with specific portfolios. The choir did perform in the traditional black tie, or white shirts/black skirts, but changed c.2016 to all black outfits, with choir badged black folders. The repertoire has been the traditional amateur choral one of such as Handel's Messiah, the Requiems of Mozart, Verdi and Brahms, and such as Mendelssohn's Elijah and Bach's Passions, but it has also performed local works, such as especially the works of its president Will Todd (Gala and Gloria performed 3 times including online) and has on occasion commissioned works (Gala and Gloria), and performed works written by its own members (Rosemary Cant's You Can Shed Tears in 2006).
More detailed timeline:
21 January 1947
First formed by Conrad Eden. This is announced in a letter to the Editor published in the January 1947 issue of the Durham County Advertiser. The first rehearsal is set to be 8pm Tuesday 21st January 1947 in Burlington Art Gallery. The meeting was opened by the Mayor (Con. F. Foster) and, according to the Durham County Advertiser, the event was “so well attended that the supply of seats was exhausted”. The group was then invited to rehearse next Thursday in Bede College assembly hall. Mr J.A. Rodwell was appointed chairman. Conrad Eden proposed a 100-strong choir and Mr G.R. Bull the immediate start to rehearsals, but Mr J.E. Clarkson thought that was too hasty and said that the turnout that night was not representative of the number of people prepared to take an “active part in the society”.
